The Humminbird 788ci Review

The Humminbird 788ci Review

Upgrading your marine electronics is a quick and simple way to add an edge to any fishing trip.

A durable design, easy-to-use interface, and great features make the Humminbird 788ci 5-inch Waterproof Marine GPS and Chartplotter one of the best buys on the market.

ChartPlotter

The 788c is a sonar-only ChartPlotter with a high-res color screen. It can also be easily adapted to be interfaced with an external GPS sensor.

My unit came with a protective front panel cover, power cable, two-directional mounting bracket, quick reference guide, operations manual, installation instructions, and a dual frequency transom mount transducer.

Crisp and Clear 5 Inch Screen

The first thing I noticed was the impressive screen. Measuring 5 inches diagonally, the picture was clear and crisp, even in direct sunlight.

This has always been a problem for any marine electronics that I have ever come across, but the colors remained true on the 788c with almost no reflectivity.

Multiple Viewing Styles

The controls are relatively simple with a 12 button interface and a 4-way cursor button. There are multiple viewing styles including a 3-D bird’s view, a 2-D overhead view, and some split screen options. There is also zoom option which can keep a clean picture even with close-ups.

Save Your Fishing Spots with the Waypoint Function

The Waypoint function is both useful and intuitive.

It simply takes a single click of a button to set a waypoint, and then another click to get directions to that waypoint at anytime in the future. Multiple waypoints can be strung along to create routes by going to the ‘Create Route’ menu.

FishFinder Mode with SwitchFire

The Fishfinder mode is easy to use and very effective. Bottom line depths can be set anywhere from 10 to 60 feet with 2x, 4x, 6x, and 8x zooms for the resolution. The maximum depth for this unit is 1500 feet.

One of the best features of the unit is the Humminbird SwitchFire Sonar, a Humminbird exclusive. This was developed to clean up the view in more shallow scans and it works phenomenally so you can easily see what is going on under the water.

Summary

This is the perfect unit for any marine enthusiast looking for a sturdy chartplotter and fish finder with a clean view and tons of useful features.
